A Guide to Brick Pavers

This article is about the steps a contractor will take when brick paving. Brick paving is a safe, reliable, and relatively inexpensive solution to many different types of outdoor paving needs. Read on to find out more.

Clearing the ground

The process starts with setting up the area for installation by removing any existing stones or obstructions. This can be done by hand, or with the help of heavy equipment. A gravel foundation is then laid down, to support the new paving and to aid drainage. The area must then be levelled out, to ensure that the paving will lay flat on its foundation.

Laying the bricks

Bricks will be either laid tightly together or in a staggered pattern depending on the type of brick paving being laid. Each row should be laid level with the last and no space, gaps, or cracks should be left. The same spacing should be used throughout the entire area to maintain consistency and avoid any hassle during installation.

Crushing smaller stones

For some types of brick paving, small stones will be added into the mix to help cover up gaps between bricks and make it more aesthetic. These stones are usually crushed rocks that come in different sizes depending on which size hole they are made for. The goal is to cover up gaps between bricks without leaving any empty holes for weeds to grow through. The stones should be kept to the same height and thickness as the bricks, so they are not exposed at all.

Prepping for mortar

Once the brick paving is laid down, it is time to mix and apply the mortar. The material will be pressed out onto the ground in long, thin sheets. This will help create a smooth and attractive surface along with help of making it stronger so that it does not become damaged from weather or wear over time. It should be applied evenly between each piece of paving.

Applying sealant

After the sealant is applied, the brick paving will need to rest and dry for several hours before it can be walked on. The sealant will help to protect the brick pavers from damage that could be caused by the elements. When the sealant is dry, it can be walked on. It gives the cement time to set so that the bricks are firmly connected together.
