Three Things To Consider When Buying Your Pallets

Posted on: 27 October 2020

Pallets are a very useful tool for any company transporting large amounts of material. Not only do they allow you to securely store whatever it is you are transporting, but there are also a lot of different types of pallets, all of which have their own unique benefits and applications. However, if you are not very familiar with pallets then choosing the correct type for your needs can be a bit tricky. Here are a few helpful tips that should point you in the right direction when it comes to choosing the right pallets for you and your company.

Transport

The number one determining factor for most people when choosing their pallets is just how easy they will be to transport. After all, you are not really going to be too concerned with how they look or anything cosmetic because customers will not be able to see them. Think about what type of forklifts you have and how your warehouse is oriented and then consider how quickly the pallets will need to be moved. You can find pallets able to be moved only from one direction, two directions and all four sides. Always get the easiest option to move, as this will make your life a lot easier.

Material

While wood is undoubtedly king when it comes to the material of your pallets, there are other options if you look a bit deeper. Wood pallets are good because they are very sturdy and quite cheap, but you can only reuse them a certain number of times which makes them inefficient in some industries. Plastic pallets generally don't have the same load resistance as wood, but they are much better for foodstuffs and can be reused almost an infinite number of times. Metal is the strongest, but this comes at a higher cost that is balanced by the fact that you can reuse it as much as you can plastic, if not more. For larger, heavier loads, you might want metal, but for all other purposes, wood is the easiest choice.

Cargo

There is no use in deciding what pallets you need if you are not taking into consideration the cargo that will actually be loaded on top of them. If you are working in construction, then you will need the most heavy-duty and weather-resistant pallets you can find. On the other hand, if you are merely transporting clothing, books or small goods, recycled wooden pallets can not only save you money but meet all your requirements and then some. Always consider whether your cargo will react badly to the material of the pallets it is paired with.
